NIGERIA LABOR CONGRESS (NLC)
This trade union is seen as one of the most active in the country, due to how they handle issues affecting labour workers in the country, by going on industrial action. NLC house the workers in the country by intervening for them against some government odd policies. The trade union body was established in 1978 and has Comr. Ayuba Wabba as its present president.
Furthermore, the Nigerian Labour Congress objective is to free Nigerian labour force from maltreatment and abuse, which is mostly through some government implementation and programmes which affects the workers. Issues that the body castigate includes: hike in fuel price, poor payment of salaries and stipends and other agonizing issues affecting the general workers.
ACADEMIC STAFF UNION OF UNIVERSITIES (ASUU)
This is another trade union in the country. It began in 1978 replacing the then Nigerian Association of University Teachers. The union incorporates all senior and academic staffs in the federal and state universities in Nigeria.
The association acts as protective shield for all government public universities academic staffs, by securing the privileges of its members. ASUU has been seen is so many case going on strike thereby rendering all government universities closed. NON-ACADEMIC STAFF UNION OF UNIVERSITIES (NASU)
Popularly known as NASU, it is related union to the preceding one above (ASUU). This association deals with all issues concerning with non-academic staffs of Nigerian universities, by speaking for the lesser non- teaching staff of public institutions.
NASU was formed as a trade union association in 1977 through the Decree No. 22 (Davison 1977). The formation of this union was because of the need to address critical issue concerning non-academic workers in the government universities.
NIGERIA UNION OF TEACHERS (NUT)
The Nigeria Union of Teachers is a trade union that houses all the teachers in both government primary and secondary schools in the country. The need for this union to be established since March 1931 was because of vulnerabilities uncovered from the cuts in teachers’ pay rates and the appearance of supremacy in the profession.
Today, the body is embossed with the responsibility of being a voice for teachers in country.
DIRECTORS GUILD OF NIGERIA (DGN)
The entertainment industry also have trade unions to administer the field. This is seen in the photography and movie industry, as the union known as Directors Guild of Nigeria. The union is the association which serves a body for motion pictures and TV chiefs in the country’s entertainment industry.
DGN was set up in 2001 and they have presently Mr. Fred Amata as the leader of the union, which also includes movies chiefs and other personalities in the photography field. The objectives of this union is to maintain international standards in filmmaking in the country, and also ensure the enabled working condition of workers in this field.
NATIONAL UNION OF PETROLEUM AND NATURAL GAS WORKERS (NUPENG)
As the union’s name implies, they are a body that ensures the safe work conditions and satisfaction of workers in the petroleum industry. The trade union is a subsidiary of the Nigeria Labor Congress, and they are shielded by the Congress on issues concerning workers in the oil sector.
Members of the Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers includes those in the oil and gas industries, oil tank hauler drivers and some marketers of these petroleum resources.
NIGERIA MEDICAL ASSOCIATION (NMA)
The Nigerian Medical Association, NMA is union that consists of trained experts like Doctors in the medical field. Other workers in Medicine, Surgery, Obstetrics and Gynecology, Pediatrics, Public Health and Laboratory Medicine are also included in this medial union.
The Nigerian Medical Association as a trade union, aims at ensuring that medical workers are properly cared for: in salary, work safety, and creating a good environment by providing the needed medical equipment.
ACADEMIC STAFF UNION OF POLYTECHNICS (ASUP)
The Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics is congeners to its university wing, ASUU, but the difference is their area of application. ASUP body covers all the of the academic staff in the polytechnics. This includes Lecturers, technologists, and all teaching workers in all polytechnics and monotechnic in Nigeria.
The body ensures the working environment for these academic staffs, and they undergo an industrial action to criticize a particular government policy affecting them.
PETROLEUM AND NATURAL GAS SENIOR STAFF ASSOCIATION OF NIGERIA (PENGASSAN)
This is another association in the petroleum industry. PENGASSAN includes top officials and senior staff in the industry. These senior staff in the oil and gas segment are critical to the country and an action by the union may cripple economy, due to the fact that the sector is the major stake of the country.
NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF RESIDENT DOCTORS (NARD)
The Association of Resident Doctors is a medical union that comprises of all specialist in the medical profession in Nigeria. It is a subsidiary of the Nigerian Medical Association.
The role of the union is similar to NMA as it involves all the issues concerning medical workers, but the demarcation between the two medical association is that it relates to issues about resident medical doctors in Nigeria.
ACTORS GUILD OF NIGERIA
The Actors Guild of Nigeria (AGN) is a governing body that oversees and represents the interests of Nigeria’s movie actors both domestically and internationally. The address of the headquarters of this trade union is located at Suite 29, Block 2, N.C.A.C, Artiste Village, National Theatre, Iganmu – Lagos. The organization was founded by members of Nollywood, and Emeka Rollas has presided over it since August 22, 2017. The Actors Guild of Nigeria (AGN) now has about (250,000) 250 000 registered members since its formation.
The chairman leads the State Executive, which is in charge of managing the business of the Chapters. While the vice presidents of the National Executive Council are in charge of the six zones under the chapter.
AGRICULTURAL AND ALLIED EMPLOYEES’ UNION OF NIGERIA (AAEUN)
AAEUN is a trade union in Nigeria that represents agricultural workers. When the Agricultural and Allied Senior Staff Association and the Agricultural and Allied Workers’ Union of Nigeria (AAWUN) amalgamated in 2008, the union was created. It was linked with the Nigeria Labour Congress, just like both of its predecessors.
Some AAWUN members opposed the merger and persisted in running a distinct union. The Registrar of Trade Unions rejected the two unions’ proposal to combine in 2018 under the name “Agricultural and Allied Union of Nigeria.” Finally, the AAWUN and AAEUN amalgamated in 2019.
AMALGAMATED UNION OF PUBLIC CORPORATION, CIVIL SERVICE TECHNICAL AND RECREATIONAL SERVICES EMPLOYEES (AUPCTRE)
Nigerian employees in the public sector are represented by AUPCTRE. When the Nigerian government combined the National Union of Public Corporations, the Civil Service Technical Workers’ Union, and the Recreational Services Employees’ Union, the union was established in 1996. It joined with the NLC, just like all of its predecessors, and had 85,000 members by 2005.
ASSOCIATION OF SENIOR CIVIL SERVANTS OF NIGERIA (ASCSN)
The Nigerian Civil Service is represented by the ASCSN trade union. When the Nigerian government combined the Eastern Regional Land Surveyors’ Union with the Association of Senior Civil Servants, the union was established in 1978. It and the Nigeria Civil Service Union have been embroiled in a protracted demarcation dispute.
The union joined the informal Senior Staff Consultative Association of Nigeria in 1986 and had 60,000 members by 1995. It was one of the Trade Union Congress of Nigeria’s founding affiliates in 2005. Innocent Bola-Audu was chosen to lead the union in 2020.
MARITIME WORKERS’ UNION OF NIGERIA
Nigerian sailors, dockworkers, and members of associated trades are all represented by the MWUN labor union. The union, like all of its fellow unions, was a member of the NLC and had 83,479 members in 2002.
MEDICAL AND HEALTH WORKERS’ UNION OF NIGERIA
Nigerian medical professionals are represented by the MHWUN trade union. The union helped form the NLC in 1978.
FUNCTIONS OF TRADE UNIONS IN NIGERIA

REQUIREMENTS TO REGISTER TRADE UNION IN NIGERIA
It should be noted that before an application is considered to start a trade union, there must be at least fifty members for the Trade Union of employees, and two members in the case of Trade Union of employers. It is then that the application can be considered by the Registrar.
STEPS TO REGISTER A TRADE UNION
The following are the steps that should be done inorder to apply for the registration of trade unions in Nigeria.
STEP 1: SEND APPLICATION TO RESGISTRAR
Once the application for registration is signed by members, it is then sent to the Registrar of Trade Unions for vetting. There are some documents which should accompany the application which must dully state the name and reasons why such Trade Union must be established. The required documents include:
- Two original copies of the rules and constitution of the association.
- Proof of recorded minutes of the general meeting where the decision to form the union was taken.
- A comprehensive list of attendants with their various signatures, addresses, age and occupation of signatries who signed the application.
- A comprehensive list of executives of the association. It should contain the names and office of the officials, their age, addresses and occupation.
- The application itself must be submitted to the office of registrar of trade unions (RTU) with five thousand naira.
STEP TWO: AWAIT APPROVAL BY MINISTER
The next step is to wait after submission and hope that the application is approved by the Honorable minister in charge of Labour.
STEP THREE: APPLICATION IS GAZETTED FOR A PERIOD
For three months, there will be a publication of notice of application that would be made in the Federal Government’s Official Gazette. It is during this period, that objection to the registration of the trade union can be made by anyone who feels that it isn’t in the best interest of the public can then write to the Registrar of Trade Union.
STEP FOUR: REGISTRAR CONSIDERS OBJECTION APPLICATION
Normally, it is rare to see objections to Trade union applications, but according to the laid down rules in registrering an association or union, there must be consideration of objections by the registrar raised towards the registration of the union. Normally, if such objections are credible, the Registrar will immediately notify the applicant accordingly without approving the application but if such is found without evidence, then the trade union is formed without hassles.
STEP FIVE: PRESENTATION OF CERTIFICATE TO THE TRADE UNION
Once all the above steps is met and complied with, the Trade Union is now dully registered and would be presented with a certificate of registration to kick start its activities lawfully.
