Overview of Sokoto State
Sokoto State was created from the then Northwestern region in June 3, 1976. The former regime of General Murtala Mohammed took the decisive step to make the region an independent entity. Situated in the North Western tip of Nigeria, Sokoto State occupies an area of 25,973 squarekilometers. It shares common borders with Niger Republic to the North, Zamfara State to the East, Kebbi State to the South-East and Benin Republic to the West.
Sokoto State has it capital in Sokoto, the largest city in the state. The state is named after its capital Sokoto, a historic city which houses the seat of the Sokoto Caliphate. The Sultan of Sokoto is a direct descendant of Usman Dan Fodio and is the spiritual head of all muslims in Nigeria. This has made the state to be very illustrious and celebrated.
