Biography of Robert Mugabe
Robert Gabriel Mugabe was born on 21 February 1924 and the immediate past President of Zimbabwe. He took over from Canaan Banana since 22 December 1987 till date. He is also Zimbabwe’s first executive head of state and former prime minister leading the Zimbabwe African National Union –Patriotic Front (ZANU–PF) since 1975.
Robert Mugabe’s Political Career
Mugabe became popular in the 1960s when he was elected leader of the Zimbabwe African National Union (ZANU) when the conflict against the conservative white-minority government of Rhodesia was at its peak. For more than ten years, Mugabe was a political prisoner in Rhodesia from 1964 and 1974.
He became Prime minister of Zimbabwe after winning the general elections of 1980, the same year Zimbabwe got her independence. Mugabe created a one party state under the ZANU–PF, with troops specially trained in North Korea that were loyal to him, the Fifth Brigade, to deal with any opposition.
Zimbabwe’s Ethnic Cleansing
From 1982 to 1985, at least 20,000 people died in what was termed “ethnic cleansing” due to the political unrest in the country at that time and were all buried in mass graves. By 1987, Mugabe established his power in December 1987 and was declared executive president by parliament with total power (Autocratic). He was both head of government, head of state, commander of the armed forces, could dissolve the parliament and could even declare martial law against anyone that opposed his policy.

Mugabe policies were mostly on human resource managment giving priority to agriculture and education which saw Zimbabwe as the highest adult literate country at a certain time.

While still married to Hayfron, Mugabe got his secretary Grace Marufu pregnant, who he later married after the death of Sally Hayfron. Robert Mugabe is said to have three children, a girl and two boys.
