Father’s Day: Honouring All Fathers

Today, June 19, 2016, is Father’s day, a day specially set aside to celebrate and honour all fathers worldwide.

Father’s day is celebrated on the third Sunday in June every year. This day has been set aside to honour all fathers, grandfathers, great grandfathers, father figures and to some extent, potential fathers for all their contribution towards making the family and society at large better.

Fathers are treasures, very important in the lives of children, especially in their formative years, they are also the pillars that hold their homes together as one along with the mothers and they are seen as kings, priests and prophets in the home.

They have the ability to bless their families and it remains just as they have said. This is how God designed it to be.

Father’s day was designed to compliment Mother’s day and it is not a federal holiday. It does not prevent businesses from transacting too.

In the early 20th century, Father’s day celebrations began in the United States on June 19, 1910 in Spokane, Washington at a Young Men’s Christian Association (YMCA) gathering.

The person credited for originating the celebration is in fact, a woman, Sonora Smart Dodd.

On learning about Mother’s day in 1909, she told her pastor that she thought Fathers should also be celebrated on a particular day. The local clergymen agreed to the idea and the first Father’s day sermon was given on June 19, 1910.

Father’s day is celebrated through gift giving, card sharing, dining and wining, prayers for one’s father and outings just to mention but a few.
